Cozy camp slip-ons are heating up, with every brand from Merrell to Teva to The North Face now blurring the line between outdoor shoe and sleeping bag.

But while most examples don’t venture far from base camp, Hoka blazes its own trail with the Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX.

The new slip-on boot from the king of cushion comes with a bevy of high-tech features that can go anywhere — and in just about any weather.

Many camp shoes only look the part; they lack the materials, insulation and technology needed to handle much more than a walk up the road from the tent to the communal bathroom.

The Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX, meanwhile, is just as technical as genuine hiking boot or sleeping bag. Literally.

Not your typical outsole. Vibram Megagrip and 5mm lugs mean the boot can take on extreme trails, no matter the conditions.

The slip-on, mid-height boot features a dual-density midsole made up of compression-molded EVA foam just like many of Hoka’s best-selling running shoes. The brand then paired it with a rugged Vibram Megagrip outsole carrying somewhat-aggressive 5mm lugs to handle extreme conditions.

With 300 grams of PrimaLoft Black, the boot is rated to -25 degrees Fahrenheit (no, that minus sign isn’t a typo).

Also extreme: the shoes are cold-weather rated to -25 degrees Fahrenheit, thanks to their 300 grams of PrimaLoft Black insulation and stretchy fleece collar. A waterproof Gore-Tex membrane ensures that insulation works properly in wet and slushy conditions.

Finally, the Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX trades laces for a bungee-toggle that makes it easy to get on or off.

Price and availability

Hoka has yet to reveal an official release date for the Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX, however, the boot is start to trickle onto the sites of retailers like JAX.

Expect it to hit Hoka’s site in the coming weeks. When it does, the boot will carry a price tag of $200 and come in a range of colors, including black and Honey brown.

In the meantime, pick up a great deal on one of Hoka’s existing hiking boots or check out the new Tecton X 3 or Speedgoat 6 trail runners launched over the past few weeks.
