Over the years, Hoka’s become synonymous with high-stack, max-cushioned shoes for running, hiking or simply commuting to work — a trait that’s turned the brand into one of the biggest shoemakers on the planet.

But can you have too much of a good thing?

If Hoka’s latest shoe doesn’t answer the question outright, at the very least it argues that comfort and cushioning are only half the battle.

Cushion, meet stability

At face value, the Arahi 8 is the next installment in Hoka’s overlooked stability series. However, calling it an update is like calling Usain Bolt a casual runner.

From top to bottom, the Arahi 8 is a basically brand-new shoe in Hoka’s ecosystem, and it’s proof alone that the brand isn’t content to continue as a one-trick pony.

At the heart of the new shoe lies Hoka’s H-frame system, a stabilizing technology first seen on the Gaviota 5. Replacing the J-frame on previous Arahi models, it basically puts firmer foam around the entire perimeter of the shoe, as opposed to just one side.

The effect is two-fold. It increases bilateral stability, while providing a platform for softer, shock-absorbent foams. In this case, that means dual-density CMEVA, an upgrade from the Arahi 7.

Fortunately, Hoka also decided to address the outdated upper, trading a plain knit material for double jacquard mesh, resulting in a more streamlined look and feel.

Pricing and availability

The Arahi 8 will be available from Hoka’s official website starting July 1.

It costs $150 and comes in three widths, from standard to extra wide, and six launch colorways, including Stardust gray and black with blue accents.
