I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: everyone should have a pen in their everyday carry loadout. Yes, even in the digital age, they come in handy much more often than you might think.

That said, I understand that space is a pretty common limitation. You’re already carrying your phone, keys, wallet and (if you’re like me) a pocket knife or multi-tool daily. Who has room for a pen?

Hancept’s wildly innovative Zero Mk2 EDC pen is here to smash that excuse once and for all. It might just be the most carry-friendly writing utensil ever made.

Is this your card?

To understand the beauty of the Hancept Zero Mk2, you have to see it in its collapsed form. This magnificent EDC pen can transform in about three seconds into a 2mm-thick card (slightly thicker than two credit cards).

That means it can easily fit into your wallet for storage between uses, saving you big time on that precious pocket real estate. It also weighs less than an ounce, so you might even forget it’s in your wallet until you need it.

When that happens, its 54 precision-machined parts — crafted from titanium PVD-coated 316L stainless steel, aluminum, durable POM (a thermoplastic) and N52 neodymium magnets — roll up into a hexagonal pen with a full-sized grip.

The materials give it a sturdy shape, while the magnets hold it together. Even if you drop it off your desk, it’ll stay intact (and in whichever mode it was in when you dropped it).

Hancept has built the Zero Mk2 to fit standard D1 refill cartridges. These are highly common, accessible, and affordable and made by brands like Schmidt and Uni (as in Uniball).

Evolution revolution

As its name suggests, Hancept’s Zero Mk2 is the evolution of the original Zero. While conceptually the same, the Mk2 improves on the Zero’s design in several significant ways.

For starters, the overall design is more refined, multifaceted and sophisticated. Its edges are more rounded and its reinforcements are tighter and stronger. It also has a sleeker edge angle, making slipping into your wallet slots easier.

Extreme attention to detail helps make this transforming EDC pen much more than a novelty. It’s a tour de force in design and innovation.

When converted to pen form, the magnets offer a better, sharper click — as opposed to the clunky “thunk” of the original. The pen’s body also has a stronger overall structure; it retains its hexagonal shape even when twisted.

All of this was born of a painstaking redesign process. Hancept put the pen through a whopping 34 design revisions and crafted 27 different prototypes before they were happy with the Mk2.

Pricing and availability

Hancept’s Zero Mk2 EDC pen is presently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. Luckily, it has already smashed its goal nearly twenty times over, meaning it is definitely going into production.

If you want to add to that funding and secure a pen, the pricing starts at $249. While that might seem expensive, that’s the price you pay for this level of innovation.
