Nearly twenty years ago, Jason McCarthy sketched an idea for a backpack on a napkin. The concept was simple: He wanted a bag that could perform just as well in the metropolis of New York City as in the war-torn zones around Baghdad.

He called that bag the GR1, and soon after, GoRuck was born. Now, that original pack — the one that put the brand on the map — has returned. The GoRuck GR1 USA Throwback is a faithful recreation of the bag that started it all.

Back in the USA

The “USA” in GR1 USA Throwback isn’t just for show. As has always been a hallmark of GoRuck’s business, this pack is American-made. Furthermore, it utilizes construction techniques proven by Special Forces soldiers in the harshest environments on Earth.

Even 17 years after its first release, this bag is still among the best backpacks ever made — tactical or otherwise.

That starts with its array of ultra-tough mil-spec materials, including 1000D Cordura and 1680D ballistic nylon—both fabrics that can withstand even the worst punishment. It also features MOLLE modular webbing on the front, padded straps and even its interior.

This bag is incredibly versatile, looks great and performs to the highest standards. Whether you want to use it as an EDC pack for your daily commute to and from work or take it on a multi-day hike, it will handle both (and everything in between) with grace and aplomb.

And still champion

Along with its unrivaled construction, materials and attachment points, this tactical bag has dozens of other top-notch features that have helped elevate it to legendary status.

For instance, this revival still features the bag’s original bombproof laptop sleeve. Yes, it’s really bombproof and has been tested many times (including by independent reviewers) to prove it.

It also has a removable hard plastic frame sheet for added stability, a trio of interior organizational pockets, hydration pack compatibility, reinforced and padded straps and so much more.

Even 17 years after its first release, this bag is still among the best backpacks ever made — tactical or otherwise. That’s a badge of honor GoRuck should be proud to wear.

Available now (for a limited time)

The GoRuck GR1 USA Throwback is now available in 21- and 26-liter capacities on the brand’s site. Pricing starts at $335 and goes up to $345.

However, this is a limited archival release, so these bags won’t be around forever. They’re likely to sell out quickly, and there’s no telling how long it’ll be before the brand brings them back again (if ever).
