Gerber’s Latest Affordable Folder Isn’t a Knife at All

Pocket knives sure are handy, but sometimes you need something a little more … serrated.

When it comes to packing formidable backcountry tools down into more carry-friendly sizes, Portland, Oregon-based Gerber has proven to be a bit of an industry leader.

I make that statement largely based on the brand’s 2021 introduction of a pretty spectacular folding machete, the DoubleDown, which went on to make that year’s GP100.

Gerber also makes compact hatchets, tomahawks and shovels, but perhaps the most fitting sequel to that eye-popping release is another innovative folding outdoor accessory: the Bushcraft Saw.

While it’s not necessarily the first or most head-turning of its kind — Sweden’s Woxna makes some real beauties — Gerber’s product is true to the brand’s ethos.

In other words, it is unfailingly affordable and utilitarian, two descriptors that are pretty hard to beat in the backcountry.

Armed to the teeth

Much like Gerber’s wallet-friendly EDC knives, the Bushcraft Saw is focused on value. Toward that end it packs durable materials and dependable functionality from blade to handle.

Dubbed Sawtooth Tech, the blades triple-ground saw teeth are positioned in an offset configuration to give you a smooth, reliable cut with every pull.

Regarding the former, you get an 8-inch chrome-plated, corrosion-resistant SK5 carbon steel blade boasting a rather innovative approach to serration.

This blade emerges from an ergonomic handle coated in rubber, allowing for a firm and efficient grip.

Adding to the user-friendly nature, the aluminum lock button can lock the blade in two different positions to ease tricky cuts you might need to make from awkward angles.

The second position also enables you to simply switch things up if/when your hand or wrist tires.

The Bushcraft Saw comes complete with a belt- and MOLLE-compatible sheath featuring a ferro rod loop, which makes a lot of sense considering a great use for this product, in the absence of a hatchet, is cutting firewood.

In a charming touch that recalls the brand’s LST Mini, the blade also features a slotted thumb hole for easy opening.

To be honest, if you’re deploying this beast with one hand, you probably don’t need any backcountry gear advice from yours truly.
