Fox Racing Just Upped the Bar for Mountain Bike Helmet Protection

The new Speedframe RS defies the classification of open-face trail helmets.

Mountain biking is all about exploring what you’re capable of — whether that’s tackling technical descents or powering up steep climbs. But as speeds increase and terrain gets more demanding, protection has to keep pace. Enter the Fox Racing Speedframe RS, a helmet that’s redefining protection for trail riders everywhere. It’s not just a fresh design — it’s earned Virginia Tech’s maximum 5-Star Helmet Rating and meets the e-bike standard NTA 8776.

Sending it has never been safer.

Best-in-Class Protection

Safety is the biggest story with the Speedframe RS, and Fox Racing isn’t just making claims — they have the data to back it up.

Virginia Tech’s rigorous testing evaluates helmets based on multi-directional impacts, rotational force mitigation, and overall protection. Of the 258 cycling helmets tested by the independent lab, every Fox Racing Speedframe model earned a five-star rating, with the RS leading the charge.

What makes it so safe? It starts with Mips® Integra Split, a system that was previously only found in Fox Racing’s full-face helmets. The Speedframe RS integrates this cutting-edge technology into a half-shell design, featuring two different EPS foam layers that work together to absorb both high- and low-speed impacts. A low-friction slip plane between the layers helps reduce rotational forces in a crash, one of the leading causes of concussions.

This level of protection isn’t required for mountain bike helmets, but in designing the Speedframe RS, Fox Racing saw an opportunity to meet a higher standard.

“We’re the only half-shell helmet featuring Mips® Integra Split,” said Jarred Law, Fox Racing’s Sr. Director of Merchandising. “It took a lot of work and co-development with Mips® — how to make it work and how to execute it the best way possible — but it was worth it.”

Fit and Comfort That Doesn’t Quit

A helmet can have all the tech in the world, but if it doesn’t fit right, it can’t do its job. The Speedframe RS features a BOA® Fit System, offering precise, micro-adjustable tension for a custom feel. Each click of the dial adjusts the fit by just 1mm, ensuring easy adjustability and comfort on long rides.

Although safety was number one in the development of the Speedframe RS, fit and function weren’t far behind. According to Law, partnering with BOA® led to huge gains in both.

“The micro-adjustability lets you get the perfect fit, no matter what,” he said.

The Speedframe RS also features a three-position adjustable visor, which is easy enough to adjust with one hand. And nestled below the visor? Fox Racing tackled one of the few complaints riders had about the Speedframe Pro model: sunglasses storage.

All three Speedframe models now include built-in eyewear storage, allowing riders to stash their shades mid-ride without worrying about them slipping out.

A Trail Helmet Designed for Every Rider

Fox Racing spent over two years developing the Speedframe RS, testing it in California, Barcelona, and beyond to ensure real-world performance. The goal? Build a helmet that not only sets a new benchmark for safety but also meets the needs of riders hitting everything from technical singletrack to high-speed descents.

Fox Racing designed the RS for every type of trail rider, whether they’re on a traditional MTB or an e-bike. In fact, the Speedframe RS is e-bike certified, which means it meets stricter impact standards than typical MTB helmets.

According to Michael Crocco, Fox Racing’s Sr. Global Marketing Manager, the Speedframe RS represents a new classification in half-shell helmets — one that leans heavily on Fox Racing’s legacy in motocross.

“We’re uniquely positioned to take what we learn from our motocross heritage and racing DNA and apply it to all disciplines of mountain biking,” he said. “As we’re making full-face helmets, we’re learning what tech works well and could help improve protection, and then we’re able to apply what we’ve learned to the half-shell category.”

Whether you’re an enduro racer, weekend warrior, or someone just looking for the best protection possible, the Speedframe RS delivers. Fox Racing set out to build a helmet that raises the bar for protection without sacrificing fit, function, or style.

The Fox Racing Speedframe RS isn’t just another helmet — it’s a new standard.
