If you’ve been paying attention to the tech world, you might have noticed a rising trend — or rather, a returning one. Like the video game consoles and accessories of the ’90s, many new releases are being offered with transparent and semitransparent outer shells.

It’s not just the tech world that this movement is seeping into, either. It’s already making its way into everyday carry. Case in point: the Flytanium Arcade Lite EDC knives.

These positively peculiar folders are a fitting homage to the Game Boys, Tamagotchis and Apple Macs of yesteryear. And luckily, they’re not just for show.

This knife’s got game, boy

As mentioned, the chief feature — the big eye-catcher — is the knives’ handle scales. Available in a quartet of unique colorways, they’re all semitransparent, meaning you can sort of see right through them.

But don’t fret. Being see-through doesn’t mean they’re cheap, flimsy or brittle. The scales are made from polycarbonate — the same material used to craft bulletproof glass — so they’re plenty sturdy.

In fact, along with being strong, they’re also resistant to chemicals, moisture and temperature changes. Furthermore, they’re remarkably lightweight — hence the name (Arcade Lite).

Like the tech they harken to, the colorful options are also extremely fun. There’s Digital Green, Atomic Purple and Ocean Blue. But for those who prefer a more subtle touch, there’s also Smoke Black.

Game Shark? More like Demko Shark

For all their quirks and their remarkably accessible price point, you might expect these knives to be little more than a novelty, not something you’d add to your EDC loadout. Well, you’d be wrong.

While they are clearly playful, they’re also very much quality cutting tools. As mentioned, the handles are tough polycarbonate, but they’re also textured to give some satisfying grip to the user.

But that’s hardly all they have going for them. The blade, for instance, is AUS-10A steel — an upgraded version of AUS-8 that’s often compared to D2 (albeit slightly less tough but more corrosion resistant). That material, plus the drop-point shape, makes these blades plenty capable cutters.

Secondly, these knives are equipped with Andrew Demko’s iconic Shark Lock, a variant of a back lock known for its extreme strength and durability. This lock is also one-hand operable, fidget-friendly and more. Honestly, it’s kind of surprising these knives are so inexpensive.
