Wild Horses Couldn’t Drag Me from Filson’s Gorgeous New Canvas Jacket, Even If It’s Not Designed for Me

And hey, if you dig it like I do, don’t let the intended market for the Botanical Flower Barn Coat stop you from snagging one.

In a recent Youtube video, Gear Patrol‘s own Mykim Dang discusses the fact that because many outdoor brands fail to adequately address women’s fit and style needs, they often resort to wearing sized-down versions of whatever men’s items are available.

I found myself somewhat on the flip side of that equation admiring Filson’s first-ever women’s spring collection.

Because as much as I appreciate the brand’s existing catalog, it doesn’t make anything like the Women’s Canvas Barn Coat for men.

Especially not with the Botanical Flower treatment that I imagine will be a huge hit with the brand’s growing female demographic.

But who’s to say I can’t pull a Mykim and size my way up to rocking this coat? Here’s why I am pretty tempted.

Flower power

While Filson has been in business for 128 years, the brand has only gotten serious about the women’s market within the past couple years.

Last February brought the announcement of the first women’s lifestyle collection, and earlier this month came the spring line, featuring a number of coats and jackets and other garments with classic Filson style plus female-friendly aesthetics and sizing.

Then there’s Botanical Flower Canvas Barn Coat. While I can’t imagine they would ever make such a garment for men, I felt its tractor beam-like pull from the moment I saw it.

In addition to its eye-popping floral style, this jacket is packed with the bona fides that make Filson such a beloved brand for outdoor enthusiasts.

It’s made of durable canvas that resists wind, punctures and abrasion — and will only improve with time as it takes on a broken-in patina.

The corduroy-lined collar, cuffs and front placket provide a bit of extra comfort and protection against the elements, while the roomy front patch pockets provide plenty of room for your hands or extra gear.

While some garments for women are specifically shaped to fit their form, GP editor Brad Lanphear informs me that this particular garment simply has a shorter body, and that crop men’s jackets are in these days.

Filson says this coat has a relaxed fit and if you are in between sizes, you should size down. As a man who normally wears a size S, I’m planning to jump up to a medium and let ’er rip. (For best results, I’ll try it on at the Filson store first.)

Availability and pricing

The Women’s Canvas Barn Coat will be available for purchase beginning Friday, February 28th. The Storm Blue and Feather Gray versions will cost $275 while the Botanical Flower version goes for $325.
