Filson’s Most Iconic Duffel Bag Has Never Been More EDC-Friendly

Crafted with the same superb materials and attention to detail, the brand’s staple travel bag gets its most diminutive edition yet.

A couple of years ago, we reviewed Filson’s Small Duffle Bag, finding it to be the ideal minimalist travel bag, if a bit pricey. At the time, it was Filson’s smallest take on its iconic duffle.

That’s no longer the case. The brand has now launched the Filson Rugged Twill XS Compact Duffle Bag, the most everyday carry-friendly version of its staple bag ever.

Miniature masterpiece

This new take on Filson’s longtime fan-favorite duffle measures 12.5 inches by 6.75 inches and 7.75 inches high. Its internal capacity is around 10 liters (or just under three gallons).

For reference, the Filson Small Rugged Twill Duffle — the one we reviewed — is much larger. Its capacity is about 33 liters — more than triple the new one’s.

That makes it about the same size as many popular day packs and lends credence to its usage as an EDC shoulder bag. It also helps make it a little more secure, as you can more easily keep it protected on your person while commuting or traveling.

Despite its diminutive size, it’s still built to the same exacting standards as its larger siblings, so you needn’t worry about any dips in quality.

Along with its bridle leather carry straps, the bag also includes a removable shoulder strap.

Delightfully detailed

As mentioned, this bag is built almost exactly the same as its bigger relatives. Truly, the only difference is its size.

The exterior is crafted from Rugged Twill sourced from England’s historic British Millerain. The cloth is waxed, so it has some weatherproofing alongside its robust looks and solid durability.

That cloth fabric is mated with vegetable-tanned Bridle Leather suitcase-style carry straps and a removable shoulder strap. The same leather is also used on the zipper toggles.

Furthermore, those zipper pulls and the zipper itself are made from solid brass, which is a nice traditional touch.

It’s also worth noting that, in addition to the bag’s large main compartment, it boasts two wide exterior pockets, which are great for stashing anything you need more readily available.

Pricing and availability

The Filson Rugged Twill XS Compact Duffle Bag is available on the brand’s website in three different colorways.

The Black and Light Rust options are priced at $475, but the classic Tan option is on sale for $357. It’s worth noting that the $475 MSRP is the same as the larger 33L version of the same bag.

Styled exactly the same as its larger counterparts and carefully crafted in Italy, Filson’s extra-small take on its iconic duffel bag is a much more EDC-friendly version perfect for day-to-day usage or as a supplementary travel bag. It’s still crafted from the same high-end British Millerain-sourced fabric and bridle leather, but is at least a third smaller than the next-smallest version of the same duffel.
