A few decades ago, Ernest Emerson designed a folding knife he dubbed the A-100. As simple and elegant as it is powerful and robust, this knife helped change the industry forever.

Widely considered the โ€œgrandfatherโ€ of the tactical knife category, it has remained largely unaltered since its first release. However, thatโ€™s all about to change with the introduction of the Emerson A-100 Automatic.

Better, faster

The A-100 is such a good knife that it probably never needed to change. That said, this new versionโ€™s updates are welcome for anyone who values speed and efficiency in their EDC knives.

The biggest change in this version is its automatic deployment. Whereas the original was a manual folder with a thumb disc, this one has a push-button opener that launches the blade quickly and smoothly.

While there are legal implications surrounding this change โ€” some regions have restrictions on what they call โ€œswitchbladeโ€ knives โ€” it suits the tactical nature of the knife very well.

Honoring its storied past

The new deployment means the handle gets a material swap. Itโ€™s now made from sturdy, lightweight aluminum and has grippy G10 inserts. However, most of what makes this knife so good remains unchanged.

The drop point blade is still made from tough, corrosion-resistant 154CM steel. It has a tip-up pocket clip for easy, reliable carry. The silhouette is just as simple and sleek as always. Best of all, it maintains its USA-made status.

Pricing and availability

The Emerson A-100 Automatic is available exclusively at Blade HQ. Furthermore, the updates and upgrades understandably come with a price hike.

Getting one of these modernized icons will cost you $400. Despite its MSRP, itโ€™s a rarified EDC knife that will undoubtedly sell out.

One last thing: Check your local laws and regulations regarding automatic knives before buying.
