Released in February of last year, the original CRKT Padawan was sort of like the original Star Wars: an immediate hit.

Its combination of reliable blade steel, sturdy frame lock, angular yet streamlined aesthetics and approachable price tag instantly made it a compelling EDC option.

Thanks to its streamlined design and monochromatic nature, the new Padawan flirts with “minimalist masterpiece.”

But similar to how the first flick’s direct sequel elevated the Empire and cybernetic Sith Lord Darth Vader, so too does 2025’s edition of the Padawan embrace the dark side.

I mean, just look at the thing.

Black knight

Joining CRKT’s celebration of the iconic K.I.S.S. and unique Mbombo via blacked-out treatments, the Portland-based knife maker has dropped a shadow on Pedro Buzetti’s beguiling blade.

The 3.01-inch drop-point blade retains the original’s 14C28N steel, valued for its sharpness, corrosion resistance, and edge retention.

And it is still deployed via a back flipper, swings on smooth IKBS ball-bearing pivot and is held in place with a sturdy frame lock.

However, that blade is now rendered in inky black, and folds into a brushed stainless steel handle of a similar hue.

This rare angle clearly shows just how sturdy the frame lock is. That blade ain’t going anywhere.

Perhaps most notable — and most responsible for the uptick in price — are the carbon-fiber overlays on either side of the handle, each with their own unique shape.

These elements not only add a bit of wear-resistance but also provide a bit of eye-catching contrast that is not at all unwelcome.

In accordance with Buzetti’s perfectionism, the curve of the pocket clip mirrors the contour of the handle.

Rounding out this new Padwan’s features is an equally blacked-out deep carry pocket clip.

Alas, just as some practitioners of the dark arts are irredeemable, it is irreversible.

Availability and pricing

The blacked-out Padawan with carbon fiber handle overlays is available now for $100. Two other treatments cost $75 each.
