The original Mbombo sold out fast. With premium materials and a blacked-out look, this new edition probably will too.

While it is probably not on the radar of most Americans, the Kuba Kingdom thrived between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Residing in the middle of modern-day Congo, its people told of a creator god who literally vomited up the sun, the moon, the stars, the animals and humans themselves: Mbombo.

Beyond the grip-friendly jimping, the Mbombo is about as streamlined as a pocket knife can be.

Such a daunting deity can only be honored with a knife that’s equally impressive. Thankfully, veteran CRKT designer Darriel Caston is up to the task.

But while Mbombo the god is described as white in color, the new edition of this unique and formidable folder takes things in a decidedly different direction.

Back in black

Inspired by a commemorative design custom-made for the crew of a SpaceX launch, the original Mbombo sold out in a flash.

Now it’s back with a blacked-out treatment and premium materials that should make it even more coveted by fans of high-quality minimalist EDC knives.

Let’s start with the blade, which is pretty unique on its own. The shape can probably best be described as a heavily modified tanto.

A generous fuller adds to its visual appeal while subtracting weight (though at 3.5 ounces, it’s not overly light).

Look closely and you’ll see the cut-out in the handle that allows access to the subtlest of flippers.

It’s 3.23 inches long and made of Böhler M390, a super steel prized for its high edge retention and corrosion resistance.

That blade is perhaps this Mbombo’s biggest departure from a Caston-designed sibling: the much more affordable MinimalistX.

A brushed titanium handle, pocket clip and lanyard hole round out the refreshingly sleek silhouette.

Deployment comes courtesy of a cut-out in the handle that allows access to a discreet bit of grippy jimping, enabling you to flip the blade out via an IKBS ball bearing pivot.

Once out, the blade is held securely in place with a sturdy frame lock, a mechanism you typically only find on higher-end EDC knives such as this one. Only fitting for a knife named for a god.
