For all the mud that has been slung at “nepo babies” over the past few years, it seems like not much of it has stuck.

Maybe that’s because if the kid has the goods, you gotta give ’em credit, and if not, they don’t stick around long anyway.

This knife is available with three treatments, but for my money the blacked-out version takes the cake.

Case in point, the Bamboozled Assisted, a recent CRKT pocket knife release designed not by knifemaking legend Ken Onion but rather by his son, Kenny.

Shake your head if you like, but upon closer inspection I have to say the design, materials and looks — plus an approachable price point — make a strong case for adding this fine folder to your EDC.

The son also rises

Let’s clear Kenny’s background and bona fides right off the bat. He grew up in Hawaii studying at his father’s knee and eventually choosing a career as a maker and machinist.

Having spent several years mastering CAD, he has collaborated on knives with his dad and another knifemaker, Jeff Park, producing knife graphics using fiber optic lasers.

The back flipper is just substantial enough to trigger deployment without getting caught up in your pocket.

In other words, he paid some dues before daring to design his own pocket knife. The result both pays tribute to his heritage and looks to the future.

Regarding the former, it features Assisted Opening — his father’s Speedsafe tech — plus IKBS bearings for swift and smooth deployment via a back flipper.

Look close and you’ll see “Onion Jr. Design” proudly inscribed on the off side of the eye-catching tanto blade.

Regarding the latter, the 3.31-inch tanto blade adds a level of flair and just happens to be functional too: the broad point is great for puncturing and piercing yet can handle everyday cutting and slicing as well.

The materials here punch above their weight, giving this 4-ounce folder a refined look without the punishing price tag. The blade is made of durable D2 steel while the handle scales are grippy G10.

The deep-carry pocket clip is sleek but not reversible, in keeping with the streamlined silhouette.

The knife also features a burly stainless steel bolster and reliable liner lock that nonetheless enables one-hand closing.

Rounding out the features are a deep carry pocket clip, allowing the knife to keep a low profile until it’s time to shine — kind of like Kenny Onion himself.

Availability and pricing

The CRKT Bamboozled is available from KnifeCenter for $68 and directly from CRKT for $75.

Note: Along with the blacked-out treatment shown on this page — my personal favorite — there’s a tan-handled version and a silver-bladed version. All three employ the same materials and carry the same cost, making the difference purely aesthetic.
