Impostor syndrome. That’s what knife/EDC influencer Zac Whitmore (aka Zac in the Wild) appeared to be suffering from last year when his buddy, knife designer (and fellow BladeHQ alum) Ben Peterson, asked him why he didn’t design a knife himself.

So what makes this knife award-winning? The short answer is that it packs a combo of style, utility and quality materials you don’t often see in a knife costing just $67.

“If I’m being honest with myself I didn’t want to put the craftsman side of myself out there because I was worried it wouldn’t be good enough,” he admits in a June Instagram post

Apparently Peterson did a pretty good job of twisting his arm, though, because in that very same post, Whitmore shows off the Civivi Yonder, his first knife design, which won Best Buy of the Year at Blade Show 2024. The knife recently surfaced on Civivi’s website and should be available for purchase next month

Here we have a full-bellied, 2.88-inch drop-point spey blade made of reliable 14C28N steel. It’s deployed via dual thumb studs and held in place with a crossbar lock.

Dunno about you, but we think the black blade/green handle combo looks pretty badass for a couple extra bucks.

The stainless steel tip-up pocket clip can be placed on either side, making the Yonder fully ambidextrous.

Handle-wise, you can opt for either black G-10 or dark green canvas Micarta (for $2.40 more). If you really want to step up, a third variant packs a guibourtia wood handle and a Damascus steel blade, which as all know carries more history than just about anything in the knife world. That one costs 94 bucks.

While the Yonder does not come from Civivi’s in-house design team, we can see why they were quick to collaborate with Whitmore.

Ya gotta shell out for the shimmer; at $94, this Damascus version costs a buck less than the similarly bladed Nugz.

The brand has a proven track record of top-notch affordable knives (including the Yonder, it has won three out of the last four Best Buy awards), and to many experts, this particular one calls to mind another Civivi staple, the Elementum

Even so, with its particular blade shape and locking mechanism, it has a look and feel all its own. And considering the praise it has already garnered, it’s safe to say the Yonder — and its designer — are anything but impostors.

Availability and pricing

The Civivi Yonder is expected to be available for purchase next month, and we will update this story when it is. The stonewashed blade/G10 handle model will cost $67; the stonewashed black blade/canvas micarta handle model will cost $69.40; and the Damascus blade/guibourtia wood model will cost $94.
