Though it has only been around for six years, Civivi has established itself as a reliable source of good-looking, high-performing EDC knives that don’t break the bank.

The sturdy, angular G10 handle may look a bit skinny, especially when the knife is half-folded, but there’s a good reason: The additional clearance spares your knuckles when you’re using the knife to cut fruits and veggies, meats and cheeses.

The latest evidence from the Guangdong, China-based brand? Its recent team-up with renowned Polish knife maker Ostap Hel on a big-bladed new knife rather ironically called the Hid.

With a blade length of 4.14 inches, the Hid is Civivi’s biggest folder yet. The steel is 14C28N (hardness: 58-60HRC), shaped into an eye-catching, full-bodied reverse tanto with cleaver vibes.

Thumb studs located on either side of the blade enable smooth ambidextrous deployment. A nested liner lock holds the blade in place, meaning this knife is of the common one-hand opening, two-hand closing variety.

Based on the product page imagery, Civivi pretty clearly sees the Hid as ideal for outdoor food prep.

Toward that end, the handle is coarsely textured and there’s generous jimping on the spine of the blade, two features that help ward off slippage.

The Hid comes complete with a reversible deep-carry wire clip, nylon pouch and cleaning cloth. The overall length is 9.83 inches and it weighs 5.2 ounces. That may seem a bit bulky, but like with a good kitchen knife, a bit of heft can be nice when you’re chopping away.

Availability and pricing

The Civivi Hid is available now in three colorways: with a satin-finished blade and brown handle (shown); with a black stonewashed blade and black handle; and with a black stonewashed blade and green handle. All three versions are priced at $99.70.
