When iconic American brands and Chris Stapleton get together, good things tend to happen. From the reissue of a Fender amp from 1962 to award-winning affordable Buffalo Trace whiskey, the guy has repeatedly demonstrated a knack for profitable partnerships.

“I saw an opportunity to collaborate and bring back an old pattern I loved. It’s rare people build things that last a real lifetime — I love Filson stuff because it’s made to live longer than I will.”

The latest example is his most recent team-up with an ol’ partner, Filson. The two first worked together on last year’s Traveller Collection, a series of leather bags and accessories (and later a vintage-style Mackinaw Cruiser) named in honor of his 2015 album.

That project was such a hit, it was only a matter of time before they collaborated again, which brings us to today’s news: a second signature cruiser, similarly brought back to life from the brand’s past.

Now, unlike some celebrity collaborations, where the luminary lends their name and little else, Stapleton brings his deep fandom of the brand into play in actually working with them on these archival revivals.

“Being a long-time admirer of Filson, I saw an opportunity to collaborate and bring back an old pattern I loved,” Stapleton says. “It’s rare people build things that last a real lifetime — I love Filson stuff because it’s made to live longer than I will.”

This particular piece helps mark the official 110th anniversary of the Mackinaw Cruiser, which has actually been in the line since the 1897 Alaska Gold Rush but was patented by brand founder C.C. Filson in 1914. Workwear from the start, it originally served foresters working in damp Pacific Northwest climes.

The exclusive Chris Stapleton Signature Mackinaw Cruiser #2 reincarnates a deadstock blue plaid fabric sourced from Filson’s archives, replicated by Filson’s mill for this jacket, which is made in Filson’s hometown of Seattle. The pattern last appeared in the 1980s, but it looks so fresh it really speaks to the classic, damn-near timeless appeal of many Filson garments.

The design itself is little changed as well, carrying forward the original buttons and strategically located storage, including four flapped front pockets and a full-width rear pocket that, back in the day, surveyors used to store maps.

That big ol’ back pocket should come in handy even in 2024. Heck, you could probably fit a laptop in there.

Materially, the tightly woven durable wool is perfect for this time of year; it is wind resistant yet breathable and has the unique ability to insulate whether it is dry or wet.

Complementing the Cruiser is a limited-edition Outlaw State of Kind T-shirt, named for the charitable fund founded by Stapleton and his wife, singer-songwriter Morgane. The T-shirt’s proceeds will go to said fund, which supports various causes that, not unlike a certain heritage brand, are near and dear to their hearts.

Availability and pricing

Filson’s Chris Stapleton Signature Mackinaw Cruiser #2 is available now for $595. The Outlaw State of Kind T-shirt costs $50.
