With a history dating all the way back to 1902, when a Kansas blacksmith apprentice named Hoyt Buck started experimenting with better ways to temper steel, Buck Knives has built a rep for high-quality materials and construction. Now offering a wide range of outdoor, kitchen and EDC knives, the Post Falls, Idaho-based brand continues to iterate and innovate.

If Goldilocks were a knife and EDC enthusiast — and she should be, what with all the time she spends in the forest — she’d have trouble finding fault with this blade material.

Latest example? The newest “Buck of the Month,” an exclusive limited-edition version of the popular 663 Alpha Guide Pro ($224.99). This one boasts significant upgrades over the standard model, most notably rocking the blade steel that’s all the rage right now … MagnaCut.

Buck Knives 663 Alpha Guide (MagnaCut)

Yep, MagnaCut. Ever since this blade steel started getting really hot a few years back, we’ve grappled with how best to describe it. The angle that hit us today is, if Goldilocks were a knife and EDC enthusiast — and she should be, what with all the time she spends in the forest — she’d have trouble finding fault with this material.

After all, it was developed specifically as a blade steel to be optimized for toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance. It strikes a perfect balance between the three qualities, rather than making performance tradeoffs, leading us to imagine she would consider it to be “just right.”

Like the Alpha Guide Pro, this limited edition features a finger choil for a secure grip.

In the case of this particular knife, MagnaCut is a big step up from the Alpha Guide Pro’s perfectly respectable S35VN stainless steel. The new limited edition boasts a Tungsten Cerakoted, full tang, high-panel flat grind, MagnaCut stainless steel blade.

The blade measures nearly 4.4 inches long and, as with the standard edition, has a drop-point shape and jimping on top for improved grip and control during precise cuts. The overall length of the knife is 9 inches, and it weighs 5 ounces.

But that’s not all. This knife also boasts a handle made of lightweight twill carbon fiber, with grippy, machine-textured handle scales, versus the original’s Richlite and Walnut DymaLux handle options.

The scales are fully removable for easy cleaning, and the vibe carries over to the carbon fiber-patterned, tight-fitting Kydex sheath, which can be configured for multi-position carry using an adapter plate.

Finally, each knife is handcrafted at Buck’s Post Falls factory and comes complete with a certificate of authenticity. We hear Goldilocks is a stickler for that kinda thing.
