Generally speaking, cruddy knife designs go away, good ones stick around, and great ones keep coming back with fresh twists to aesthetics and materials.

That cherished third category is where you’ll find the Böker Cox, which has appeared in various iterations for more than a decade now.

What makes it so special? Along with carrying the mark of a renowned German knife maker, it is designed by industry icon — and co-founder of beloved boutique Danish knife house GiantMouse — Jens Ansø.

As fantastic as the Cox already was, its latest iteration might be its finest, thanks to a meaningful material upgrade built right into its name. Without further ado, meet the new Böker Plus Cox Titanium

Care with handle

Let’s not bury the lead. While previous versions of the Cox came with G10, Micarta or wood handle scales, the new Cox is the first to feature one made of titanium.

With a stonewashed finish that mirrors the blade, this edition’s “instant patina” somehow comes off both rough-hewn and classy.

The swap adds to the knife’s overall stability and durability while keeping it relatively lightweight, but the real upside may be the effect on the knife’s aesthetics.

With a stonewashed finish that mirrors the treatment of the blade (more on it later), this edition’s, shall we say, “instant patina” somehow comes off both rough-hewn and classy.

Such a distinction is only buttressed by the pocket clip and hardware, which are bronze anodized for a bit of visual pop against the understated steel and titanium.

Law-abiding blade

Ultimately, the handle upgrade only adds to the appeal of a knife that already boasts a number of compelling attributes.

Exhibit A is the blade, a 2.6-inch sheepsfoot made of M390 super steel, prized for its hardness, edge retention and corrosion resistance.

Whether you keep this knife on your desk or drop it in your pocket, it will live up to its looks when it comes to any everyday piercing, slicing, cutting or chopping task.

And while it may not make much difference for those outside of Germany, it’s worth noting that this knife is designed specifically to be “42a-compliant.”

The term refers quite literally to paragraph 42a of Germany’s Weapons Act, which forbids knives that can be opened and locked with one hand and have a blade lock.

In other words, your knife can legally have one feature or the other, but not both.

Toward that end, the Cox Titanium boasts one of the most premium locking mechanisms around, a frame lock, but deploys via nail nick, requiring two hands to open.

Feel free to use the extra time that it takes to work on your Jens Ansø (“Yens An SUE”) pronunciation.

It won’t be released until August 15, but the Böker Plus Cox Titanium is available for pre-order now, exclusively at Knife Lounge, for €175 (~$200).
