In a world of super steels and extremely high-end materials, there’s something to be said for simple, serviceable, under-the-radar EDC knives.

What you might not expect, however, is for one such release to come from a designer who normally trades in luxurious, expensive custom blades. But that’s just what you’ll find in Böker’s latest release.

Simple is often better

Dubbed the Echidna, this 5.35-inch EDC knife is a part of Böker’s budget-friendly Magnum sub-brand. But don’t let that scare you, as this surprisingly affordable knife is no slouch.

The knife sports a 440B steel blade mated to a nylon and TPE handle, all of which are respectable, albeit inexpensive, materials. They’re easy to maintain and, with proper care, should last for a long time — far outpacing the necessary investment.

The manual knife, which comes with a sturdy and reliable back lock, doesn’t even have a nail nick, which keeps the design looking as minimalist as possible.

The design speaks for itself

Penned by Raphael Durand, a French designer who normally trades in high-end customs and pricey production models, this knife is proof positive that affordability and style can, with careful work, go hand in hand.

The knife is free of all unnecessary flourishes, letting its beautiful, ergonomic curves speak for themselves. For as simple, barebones and inexpensive as it is, the Echidna punches well above its weight class style-wise.

Pricing and availability

As Böker is wont to do, the brand has sneakily released the Echidna for sale already. You can find it on the brand’s site for $41, but you can get an even better deal over at Blade HQ, where it’s going for only $30, though for how long remains to be seen.
