Some people are so obsessed with “purity,” they find it hard to fathom the appeal of a guitar that’s not acoustic, a car that’s not manual or a bike that’s not fixed gear.

I’m one of those assholes, which is probably why I’m currently gaga for the latest collaboration between vaunted German knife manufacturer Böker and renowned US knife designer Lucas Burnley.

The Stargaze just might have you reconsidering the merits of a fixed-blade knife.

Because while I do admittedly appreciate a quality folding knife (and own several), hot damn the new BFF Packlite Stargaze is crisp and clean — one of the purest fixed blades I’ve ever seen.

It’s also one of the lightest, with a cool strip-down option that makes it even lighter, too.

Look, I understand that many EDC pocket knife enthusiasts will roll their eyes. Heck, probably 95 percent of the knives Gear Patrol covers are folders.

But there’s a place for the fixed blade in many kits.

Why else would respected brands like Benchmade and CRKT produce knives like the Dacian and Nessmuk (both of which you’ll find in my stash) if that were not the case?

If you decide to give one a shot, the Stargaze makes a helluva case.

First off, the 3.11 drop-point blade is made of MagnaCut, the trendy for a reason super steel that optimally blends edge retention, corrosion resistance and toughness.

The blade also boasts an angular ricasso and grip-friendly jimping, plus a Cerakote finish that only augments its durability.

The minimalist magic extends to the handle scales, which are made of super sustainable Richlite and attached with a couple of golden handle screws that shimmer in the sun.

That’s not all they do, however.

They also enable you to remove the scales, revealing a skeletonized structure that shaves even more weight, a stunning bit of streamlining considering the fact that to begin with, this 6.85-inch knife only weighs 1.94 ounces.

The Stargaze comes complete with a snug Kydex sheath and ball chain, enabling you to tote it safely in a pocket, on a belt (with the help of an Ulticlip Slim 3.3) or — in the style of a backcountry purist — around your neck.
