It’s not particularly unusual to encounter design novelties in the EDC world. But it’s a lot trickier to find unique features that are practical and useful. Even when a knife offers something more off-the-beaten-path, it’s typically relegated to a single feature.

The Bestechman Guardian bucks those trends. This knife sports a highly irregular, albeit handy, blade shape alongside a handle with a noteworthy material application. Best of all, it offers all that (and more) at a relatively low price.

The Bestech Guardian measures 7.577 inches, 4.368 of which comprise the handle. But it’s not the size of the handle that’s noteworthy; it’s the material.

This knife — which houses a trendy button lock — is equipped with G10 handle scales. The material is well-known in the EDC world for its durability, grip and relatively low cost. However, how these particular scales were crafted makes them much more interesting than typical G10.

In this case, the material is layered in a cross-hatched pattern that gives it greater depth and texture, similar to woven carbon fiber. This relatively subtle touch — especially on the more brightly colored options — adds a bit of flair to the knife without jacking up its price.

It’s worth noting that not all eight Guardian options come with this style of G10. Two versions, the purple colorway with a black blade and the jade colorway with a silver blade, have more standard textured G10 scales.

Bizarro blade

While the unique G10 scales are a highlight, they’re hardly the only one. On the other side of the pivot, the Guardian’s 3.209-inch D2 steel blade is also a show stopper. The difference here, however, is its unconventional shape.

The overall shape, especially the belly, looks like a Wharncliffe — noteworthy for its long, relatively straight cutting edge. But as you get closer to the tip, you’ll notice a steep, sloping drop-off — more like a hunting-friendly clip point.

I’ve not seen a blade shaped like this before, and now I’m scratching my head as to why. The clip point gives it a more prominent piercing edge without sacrificing the slicing ability of the Wharncliffe belly.

In short, I adore the cleverness of combining these two seemingly at-odds blade shapes. It’s strange, but it works extremely well.

Available now

All eight editions of the Bestechman Guardian are available for purchase, starting at $54 and only going as high as $56 (that’s 15 percent off the MSRP). They’re incredibly affordable and should offer tremendous value to anyone who purchases one.

Having said that, Bestechman’s site listings already note that some colorways are running low. If you want a Guardian for yourself, I recommend buying soon.
