Everyday carry has been and always will be a game of compromises. Users must be willing to find a balance between materials, weight, size, cost, and so on to find a loadout that works for them. This is especially true when it comes to pocket knives.

One of the toughest trade-offs is usually between lightness and toughness, with more robust and high-quality knives typically weighing more. However, the folks at Avian Knives may have done the impossible with the Avian Knives Topaza V1.

For a fully featured and all-metal knife, it’s remarkably lightweight.

Built to thrill

To better understand how magnificent this knife truly is, you first need to understand its construction and mechanisms.

For instance, its 3.228-inch blade is MagnaCut steel (with the option for a black finish). Unless you’re brand-spanking-new to the EDC world, you’ve probably already familiarized yourself with this material, as it’s one of the most popular super steels available.

MagnaCut offers excellent edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance. But even that super steel isn’t as strong and corrosion-resistant as its handle.

The handle, which houses a frame lock, is titanium. First popularized in the aerospace industry, this remarkable metal is incredibly lightweight while retaining an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.

Light as a feather, stiff as a board

Altogether, the Avian Knives Topaza V1 measures 7.72 inches (4.3, when closed). As a reminder, its blade is 3.228 inches, it also has a frame lock, a pocket clip and a flipper deployment.

By every measure, that makes it a fully featured EDC knife. I’d even go so far as to call it pretty high-end. On average, knives of this caliber will typically weigh three to five ounces (and some even more). However, this one weighs a mind-blowing 1.6 ounces total.

For an all-metal knife, that’s pretty spectacular. Hell, even if it had a synthetic handle, it would be a pretty major achievement for a knife this large.

This is largely due to two factors: its material makeup and the skeletal design of the handle. This winning combination makes for a remarkably lightweight knife that retains plenty of strength and durability.
