Though the term “heirloom pocket knife” is a bit amorphous, it does bring certain associations to mind, including but not always “heritage,” “wood” and “simplicity.”

Only with real intent can you press the button to deploy the blade and activate the safety, then reverse the process to bring it back into its handle. Just like with a drill or gun, the odds of these steps all happening by accident are incredibly slim.

Such thought bubbles are part of what makes the knife we are focusing on today so interesting. Because while it does feature wood, Artisan Cutlery’s Holm only launched recently.

And while it is relatively simple to operate, it boasts an intricately engineered safety feature you probably won’t find in the knife your grandfather passes down to you.

Safe and sound

Let’s cut to the chase, so to speak. In addition to a button lock, a fancy feature AC has previously embraced, the Holm also has a safety switch. Now, a button lock is pretty secure on its own. However, there is always a chance that the button can be depressed unintentionally, causing the knife to close (or open) by accident.

Enter the safety switch, an additional component that adds a layer of security. Much like the safety on a hand drill (or a gun), when the safety is depressed, it reinforces the (open or closed) lockage.

The big button is the button lock; the smaller toggle to its right is the safety switch.

This switch then sticks out the other side, and pressing in the opposite direction releases it. The real magic here is that the side with the button lock is also where the button that activates the safety lies.

In other words, only with real intent can you press the button to deploy the blade and activate the safety, then reverse the process to bring it back into its handle. Just like with a drill or gun, the odds of these steps all happening by accident are incredibly slim.

Heirloom elements

It is worth noting that in addition to this innovative safety feature, and despite the fact that it is essentially brand-new, the Holm does carry some timeless touches that can’t be overlooked.

Pivoting on a ceramic ball bearing, the 3.1-inch wharncliffe blade is made of AR-RPM9 steel, Artisan’s proprietary steel. It’s basically a powderized version of the type used in many Victorinox knives — but of a higher quality that’s primed to tackle everyday cutting and slicing.

The knife’s overall length is 7.27 inches, its closed length is 4.2 inches and it weighs 3.01 ounces.

There are four standard editions, all of which share many qualities but differ aesthetically in a few ways. The ultra-heirloom-y version shown on this page features a stonewashed blade and a stonewashed steel handle with a rose wood inlay.

Other versions have black PVD blade finishes and handles, liners and clips employing black/gold/rose gold PVD steel and black G10 and ebony inlays. (All four versions get black lanyards.)

In other words, there’s plenty of variety to pick out something just right for you — or whomever you hope to one day pass the knife onto.
