Aer’s Ultralight EDC Bags May Look Simple, but They’re Deceptively Technical

The San Fransisco-based bag brand is no stranger to minimalism, but this new collection takes it to the next level.

Aer hit the ground running after a crowdfunding campaign in 2014. Since then, the bag brand has earned numerous accolades for its minimalist-styled, fully-featured duffles, backpacks and other bags. The brand even recently got into the luggage game with a superb carry-on.

The San Francisco-based outfit isn’t ready to slow down quite yet if its latest release is any indication. Called the Simple Collection, this launch sees two more technical bags enter Aer’s catalog, and they might just be the brand’s most minimalist yet.

Two of a kind

As mentioned, two aptly named bags comprise the Simple Collection. The first is the Simple Tote — a shoulder-hauled, open-top bag — and the second is the Simple Pouch — a smaller, zippered bag with a shoulder strap.

While they’re clearly different in size (and there are some feature variances), the bags do have a few things in common. For starters, they’re both made from Ultra400X, an ultralight, waterproof sailcloth — the same material used in the sails of performance racing yachts.

They’re also both extremely lightweight. The larger of the two weighs just 0.5 pounds, whereas the smaller one weighs only 0.2 pounds. That means they’ll really only weigh about as much as whatever you put inside them, making them ideal for everyday carry.

Both bags are exceptionally packable, too, since their cloth exteriors are so ultralight and durable. Should you need an extra, smaller bag than, say, your rolling luggage or carry-on duffle, you could easily stash either away as an auxiliary option for daily use.

Minimal style, maximal features

Ultralight constructions and minimalist styling don’t mean the Simple Collection bags lack other features. In fact, they’re a lot more technically adept than you might think.

The 0.6L Simple Pouch, for instance, has waterproof YKK zippers, multiple storage pockets, a discreet phone (or wallet) pocket and a removable, quick-adjust shoulder strap.

Similarly, the 14L Simple Tote also has waterproof YKK zippers, multiple pockets, a secure back pocket (for sensitive items like your passport) and a Fidlock magnetic buckle closure.

It’s an impressive array of additional features and mechanisms for a pair of bags that, at a glance, look like they’re as stripped-down as possible. The Simple Collection speaks volumes of Aer’s technical design prowess
