If it was good enough for downed British pilots during WWII, so the saying goes, it should be good enough for you. Though that adage is entirely fabricated, the Survivalon Contrast Jacket ($398) was indeed inspired by clothing made to protect Limey pilots; it is also easily good enough for you. The heavy coat, consisting of a waterproofed, durable shell and a warm, dense inner lining, is entirely made of Survivalon cotton poplin, tightly woven fibers that inherently keep out both water and wind. Strong zippers and Velcro trimmings, six gaping pockets (one that could easily fit an iPad), drawcords for a snug fit, and a roll-away, snap-enclosed hood make the coat a comprehensive piece of outerwear with enough fashion sense to be worn to semi-posh dinners and enough toughness to keep you ticking on just about any adventure. It can only be defeated by dry cleaning, which removes its waterproofing. Even so, all it takes to be revived is a quick re-proof.
