Given the continuous innovation in the modern athletic shoe industry, it’s rare for a given model to stick around for five years, let alone 10, let alone… 37. And yet that is how long Nike has kept the Pegasus nameplate in its stable. Launched in 1983, Pegs sheath the feet of a veritable army of devoted fans. I know this not only because it’s Nike’s all-time bestselling running shoe but because my dad is one of those fans. When he was regularly running marathons, he would buy pairs he liked two at a time, just in case the brand discontinued that particular iteration.
In retrospect, that was a smart strategy for addressing a valid concern, as Nike does update its performance shoes regularly in response to emerging R&D, and the Pegasus is no exception. It’s worth noting that the basic philosophy behind the shoe has not wavered. As the brand itself stated a couple of years ago, the Pegasus was “intended to be the shoe for every runner… designed to be half air (similar to the winged half-horse it was named after) to represent movement, quickness and the allure of flying.”

However, outside of the three years it was not part of Nike’s running shoe line — 1997 to 1999 — the Pegasus has regularly evolved. As recently as 2018, the Pegasus 35 drew inspiration from the Zoom Vaporfly 4%’s full-length carbon plate by featuring a full-length, articulated Zoom airbag. Now the latest version, the Pegasus 37, is the product of a new round of dynamic testing with both male and female runners. That research resulted in two major changes: an airbag more than twice as thick (10mm vs. 4 mm) and concentrated in the forefoot, and a gender-specific midsole, tuned to 20 psi for men and 15 psi for women.
Is the latest evolution of Pegasus the best… and for whom? Our crew of testers laced up some brand-new pairs to find out.
