The multi-tool is the most pragmatic of items. It edges out any individual knife, set of pliers or Philips head with a simple headcount of its included implements. Typically, a multi-tool eschews any attempts at visual appeal; most are a pocketable wad of stainless steel. That’s not the case for Leatherman’s newly dressed-up Charge+ Damascus, though.
The Charge+ is a familiar face in Leatherman’s multi-tool lineup. It comes packed with many of the mainstay implements: two knife blades, a saw blade, pliers, scissors, screwdrivers, a bottle opener. The new edition gets an aesthetic upgrade — its handles are available in either carbon fiber or walnut and its knife blades in Damascus steel.
A swirling appearance characterizes Damascus steel, but there’s more to it than a simple finish. The process of making it is centuries old and involves the meticulous layering and hammering of various types of steel. The result is a blend of sorts that’s known to be incredibly strong (and usually expensive). So even though the blades on the new Charge+ are pretty, they also pack an additional layer of utility, too.
