GiantMouse isn’t your typical pocket knife company. It doesn’t crank out crateloads of new designs in a year, favoring instead a tactic of producing a few limited releases and teasing them on social media to drive up hype. In that way, it’s more like a streetwear apparel brand than a traditional knife company. But at its core are two Scandinavian makers well-known in the blade world: Jesper Voxnaes and Jens Ansø. Both are lauded for their custom work — those knives can cost as much as $1,000 — and create patterns for brands like CRKT, Boker and more. GiantMouse blends their aesthetic into premium production models that don’t cost as much as a custom but have a far higher degree of quality than what’s typically produced en masse. Its newest pocket knife is called Clyde.
GiantMouse designed the Clyde to be practical enough for daily use and sleek enough to want in your pocket. It has a three-inch trailing point blade made of Elmax steel, which uncommonly maintains qualities of edge retention and easy sharpening. It comes in two builds, one with a black G10 handle and another with green micarta. Both include a flash of color — red in the black and orange in the green — in the thumb stud and backspacer, which doubles as a lanyard loop.
GiantMouse describes Voxnaes and Ansø’s Clyde design as a mash-up between Scandinavian, Japanese and Persian influence. Regardless of whether or not you can pinpoint that eclectic mix of visual cues, it can indeed be said that the knife expertly exhibits all the makings of a quality modern EDC blade that you’d typically have to pay a lot more for.
