Last year, Giro’s Aether MIPS cycling helmet earned Gear Patrol’s distinction as one of the best new fitness products of 2018. That accolade came in no small part due to the inclusion of MIPS Spherical, a fully integrated system for nullifying rotational impacts (instead of an insert, Spherical consists of two layers of foam that rotate against each other like a ball and socket joint). Now Giro is expanding that tech into a helmet for mountain bikers with the Tyrant.
The Tyrant is a full-cut helmet that covers the ears but doesn’t include a chin bar. It meets the needs of riders who descend trails at full-throttle or spend lots of time on jumps but still don’t need the full-face protection that racing calls for. Giro acknowledges that style has a place here too; Dain Zaffke, Giro’s Marketing Director, described the Tyrant in a press release as “made for riders who are more likely to be wearing jeans than a number, but are still pushing boundaries with their riding.” It channels the three-quarter motorcycle helmet you might wear while riding a cafe racer, but it’s got all of the safety chops to refute any statement that this helmet is just about looks.
The Giro Tyrant mountain bike helmet will be available soon for $150.
