The words “packable” and “lightweight” easily apply to down jackets, sleeping bags, tents and other fabric-based outdoor gear. But kettles? Not so much, and yet you could rightly pin them to a new electric kettle that appeared recently on Kickstarter called the Voyager. Nomad Joe, the company making it, built it with collapsible silicone sidewalls and a handle and spout that pivot downward, shrinking the device into a compact disc.
This design isn’t entirely novel; Sea to Summit has been making its collapsible silicone X line of cookware, which includes a kettle (but not an electric one), for years. The Voyager’s shape calls to mind Hario’s V60 Buono, a favorite amongst coffee aficionados. The addition of electricity and the ability to control the temperature the kettle reaches make the Voyager a mash-up gadget that’d be perfect for outdoor excursions where outlets are still accessible — or where you can afford to lug in an external battery, like car camping. Sure, in those situations, a bulkier kettle might not be much of a worry, but space always seems to be at a premium, particularly in a gear-packed camper (and especially for those who are picky about their pour-over coffee). Plus, this thing just looks fun, right?
The Voyager Kettle is currently funding on Kickstarter — it’s priced at $119 — and has already passed its goal.
