When summer heat levels rise into the high double digits, it gets hard to imagine wrapping yourself in any layer that might be described as “technical.” Anything that diminishes breathability in the slightest, like a rain jacket, can turn into a wearable steam room. Reconsider the wind jacket (or windbreaker, wind shirt — whatever you want to call it). Even when it’s hot, wind can cut through cotton, make you cold and box you into a layering conundrum; a wind jacket solves the problem.
Wellen, a new surf-inspired apparel brand with a focus on sustainability, recently released its take on the wind jacket called, straightforwardly, the Wind Shell. It’s made of nylon to be lightweight and packable and includes hand pockets, elastic cuffs and an adjustable hem. It also has mesh-lined vents on the back to shed heat, but its construction is entirely breathable, yet wind-resistant. That makes it perfect for trips to the beach or hikes up above treeline where, even on a hot day, wind might chill things down beyond comfort. It’s technical, but not too technical.
