Yesterday, Adidas gave athletes a glimpse into the future of its running catalog with a new shoe concept called Futurecraft Loop.
The thrust of the project is to design a performance-oriented running shoe that’s 100 percent recyclable. The shoe, currently in beta, is made from 100 percent recyclable TPU or Thermoplastic Polyurethane, the main ingredient in many shoe soles. It’s also put together using heat and pressure, not glue, which means it can be recycled, shredded, ground up and then made into another shoe.
According to Fast Company, only 10 percent of the first Futurecraft Loop shoes can be used toward a new one, but Adidas hopes to improve the ratio to a true 1:1 circularity. The first examples are being distributed to a small number of testers for further R&D, so don’t expect a full drop anytime soon. Still, it’s a novel concept that signals Adidas’s intent in the coming years — and how the brand may soon iterate on its current hits like Ultraboost.
