This New Tandem Kayak Will Fit in the Back of Your Sedan

Oru Kayak, the San Francisco-based maker of origami boats, just released its newest vessel since 2016, the two-person Haven.

Nearly a year ago, Oru Kayak, the San Francisco company known for its folding boats, gave its email subscriber list a peek at a new tandem model called Haven; now it’s here. At that time, there were few details to share beyond its two-person capacity and 40-pound weight (Oru’s previous large model, the Coast XT, weighs 34 pounds). Now all the info about the Haven is available, including its $1,999 price tag.

Like all of Oru’s kayaks, the Haven is built on the concept of origami and transforms from box to boat in 10 minutes (albeit with some practice). That box measures 33 x 15 x 29 inches, which is slightly larger than Oru’s other kayaks when they’re packed but still small enough to jam into the back of a sedan, and durable enough not to worry about on an airline’s baggage conveyor belt. At that size, it’s rather amazing that it expands to become a vessel that’s 16 feet long, with plenty of space for two (or just one — the Haven converts easily should your paddling partner bail at the last minute).
