The argument for camping by hammock is simple: it saves weight. A hammock setup, even with comfort-enhancing accessories like tarps and underquilts, can compete with many of the lightest tents in terms of total ounces packed. But Kammok, a brand that makes some of the best camping hammocks available, just released a new ultralight collection to further cut down weight and add available space in your backpack.
The centerpiece of Kammok’s new ultralight collection is the Roo Single UL, a one-person hammock that weighs just 5.6 ounces (nearly half that of its full-weight predecessor), packs down smaller than a grapefruit, and can hold up to 300 pounds.
To accompany the Roo UL, Kammok made an ultralight version of its Python straps, its proprietary tree-friendly webbing that keeps its beds aloft. Kammok claims that, at three ounces, these are the lightest hammock straps available.
The final item in the collection is the Kuhli UL, a camping tarp that weighs 10 ounces. Kammok made the Kuhli UL specifically to work with its hammocks, but it can be used dynamically to provide shelter for any base camp setup. Like the Roo UL, the Kuhli packs down extremely efficiently, to the size of a small water bottle.
Together, the items in the Ultralight Collection have a combined weight of roughly one pound three ounces, a setup that competes with the lightest one-person tents available. They’re also cheaper as a set, and all are currently up for pre-order until April 12 at discounted pricing with savings of up to 15 percent.
