Thirty-day free trial periods pertain to Casper mattresses and Spotify Premium, but gym shorts? That might be, dare I say it, disruptive. But Ten Thousand, a company with a limited yet thoughtful line of gym shorts and training apparel, has enough confidence in its product that it’s willing to give it a try.
The program is straightforward: choose a pair of shorts (there are only three), use them in the gym or outside for 30 days, keep them or, if they don’t cut it, send them back for a full refund. Ten Thousand takes care of the shipping fees both ways. (The brand sends returned shorts into its recycling program.) The program shows that the company is confident in its product — it should be; Ten Thousand has spent two years perfecting its small collection — but it also helps athletes break through the barrier between standard and premium apparel.
Ten Thousand’s cheapest pair of shorts is $58, which will undoubtedly be hard to stomach for someone who’s used to training in the same cheap pair of basketball shorts all the time. What do you get for that price tag? Lightweight Italian fabrics, carefully considered pockets and unobtrusive seams, to name a few. Reading that, many will still gawk: “So what?” But wearing a pair of quality shorts makes the case. That’s why we have no qualms about recommending workout shorts that cost up to $99, and why personal trainers often do too. And it’s why Ten Thousand isn’t worried about seeing too many returns during the first 30 days a customer sweats in and stretches out a pair of its shorts.
