Bomber jackets have been around for a while. Designed initially as flight jackets for pilots cruising at high altitudes in planes that weren’t insulated, bombers were meant to provide warmth. Early versions were constructed with leather and then nylon and some, like the B-15, featured fur collars. The model that influenced contemporary iterations the most was the MA-1, which was originally produced for the US Navy and Air Force, and later adopted by European pilots and farther down the timeline, by counterculture groups that wore it in urban settings. Today bomber jackets are widespread, and they’re also more technical; Mission Workshop’s Mission Bomber is the latest to give the classic silhouette a set of serious material upgrades.
The Mission Bomber hearkens back to the MA-1 in appearance — it features the signature ribbed collar and even comes in standard-issue navy and olive colors — but modernizes just about every other detail possible. The jacket’s exterior is a stretchy DWR-treated textile produced in Como, Italy and it’s lined inside with 37.5, a dynamic thermoregulation technology that’s woven into fabric to keep wearers cool. Between those two layers is a helping of breathable PrimaLoft Gold Active insulation for warmth. All of these things are more commonly found in technical outdoor apparel and combined here they create a casual jacket that can handle temperatures down to 32 degrees and back up to 70. If fighter pilots still wore bomber jackets, they’d probably want this one.
