When Bolt Threads, the San Francisco company aiming to produce economically-viable synthetic spider silk, bought Best Made Co. last summer, it was unclear what types of products would materialize as a result. Bolt Threads is a biotech company while Best Made started out making wood-handled axes. Collaboration products between the two have varied widely: there was a spider silk beanie and more recently, a fixed-blade knife. The newest collaboration is a stitcher.
The Brass Capsule Stitcher is the product of collaboration, but it falls squarely in the Best Made tradition of creating items that sit in a spectrum of beauty and utility. The two brands designed it as an all-in-one tool for quick fixes and repairs. Inside its cylindrical brass form are two bobbins, two stitcher needles, three hand-sewing needles, four buttons and two Tenacious Tape patches. The handsome tool provides an elegant and tastefully old-fashioned approach to dealing with gear repair, a topic that’s been addressed now more than ever by a growing list of companies that includes Patagonia, The North Face and REI. No worries if your needle and thread skills are a little rusty either — Best Made has included instructional diagrams on its site of how to create a basic stitch.
