In what seems like a missed marketing opportunity, Nike’s newest and strangest soccer cleat is officially revealed and made available, just a few days after the World Cup Final.
The PhantomVSN (short for vision) is the debut of Nike’s newest tech — Quadfit. Quadfit is a sock-like mesh inside the cleat that hugs your foot without constricting it and, due to proprietary materials and weave, doesn’t overstretch or become looser with time. The end result of this structure is a cleat that doesn’t require the usual break-in period of normal cleats, and, thanks to its Flyknit upper, offer an absurd degree of touch and connection with the ball.
The upper also provides slightly more cushion in spots where boot-meets-ball most often, and provides a visual cue in the form of a big triangle. The last notable feature of the cleat is the hidden laces — they’re calling it the “Ghost Lace” system — which keeps the laces out of the way of the game, as well as implementing a “one pull” system for equal tension all the way down the lace.
The Phantom Vision cleat ($275) released today in Triple Black, with more colorways releasing over the next few weeks.
