It’s no secret that Patagonia is out to save the world. Making the best outdoor gear available has been its mission from the get-go, but it also works hard to ensure that those items cause the least harm to the planet as possible. That’s a never-ending endeavor, but one way that Patagonia approaches the goal is to seize seasonal product updates as an opportunity to go back to the drawing board, as it just did with the re-launch of the Arbor Pack Collection.
The Arbor backpacks aren’t technical hiking bags or climbing packs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use them that way. Instead, they’re designed for everyday use, whether that means commuting to work or heading to the beach. As it did this year with its Baggies shorts, Patagonia has updated the collection with 100 percent recycled materials — eight and a half plastic bottles per bag — and a dyeing process that saves water and produces less carbon dioxide.
The bags hold their own even if the environmental factor doesn’t draw your interest. They’re built with 600-denier polyester and feature essential organizational features like laptop sleeves and small pockets. They’re also decidedly retro in style, like the packs worn by adventurers 40 years ago, when the brand was founded.
