Cleavers are typically heavy knives with hulking geometric blades designed for the toughest chopping tasks (which is why they’re favored by butchers). Even when shrunk, like Gerber’s new Flatiron pocket cleaver, that utility is maintained — with the addition of some pocket knife-specific features.
The Flatiron is an 8.5-inch folding knife with a 3.8-inch 7Cr stainless steel blade that’s highly corrosion-resistant. To make the scaled-down cleaver shape more practical for everyday use, Gerber gave the Flatiron a thumb hole so that users can quickly flick it open and an oversized choil in which the pointer finger can safely rest when choking up on the blade. The handle is made of G-10 composite scales on one side and a pocket clip-equipped, frame-locking steel on the other.
All of these components compliment the Flatiron’s bulked-up blade, making it capable of taking on the chopping, slicing and cutting tasks you would assign to any other pocket knife.
