Adidas just confirmed the first new color design for its Kanye collaboration shoe, the Yeezy Boost 350 v2. The new color, “Butter,” is beautifully summer-appropriate, but we’re more excited about this beautiful Frankenstein monster that was just cooked up by State Bicycle Co.: the Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Cycling Shoe Conversion.
The one-off is an example of what happens when sport and mainstream pop culture collide. Created by the custom shoe masterminds at Dank & Co. Customs in San Antonio, the conversion adds the clip-in capability of a cycling shoe to the profile of the Yeezys.
Jake Danklefs began the transformation by carefully removing the Yeezy’s upper to expose the sole and afterward did the same to a pair of DZR cycling shoes to remove the shank and clip-in mechanism. Once a hole was cut into the Yeezy soles, and space carved out for the shank, it was just a matter of putting the shoe back together again.
To sneakerheads, this aftermarket Yeezy is likely a horrific mutation (a new pair can cost as much as $500 on eBay), and to cyclists, well, the shoes probably don’t offer much in performance. Perhaps none of that matters though, because Yeezys aren’t really designed for function in the first place. Maybe the best way to increase a lifestyle sneaker’s repute is to outfit it with a single, overly-technical feature. And who knows, maybe a Kanye x Specialized collaboration will drop next. Stranger things have surely happened.
