Salomon’s new S/Lab Sense Ultra 2 represents the top of its trail running line — if you’re an average runner logging a few midweek miles before work, sorry, this probably isn’t the shoe for you. Take on 50k races as a side hobby? That’s another story. Salomon designed the S/Lab Sense Ultra 2 in collaboration with ultra runner Françoise D’haene, who wore them during his record-breaking run of California’s John Muir Trail last October (he completed the 210.4-mile distance in two days, 19 hours, and 26 minutes).
The Sense Ultra 2 is built to stand up to the pounding of those 50-plus mile races; the midsole features dual-density EVA foam with an EnergySave insert that’s more resistant to degradation and stands up to longer runs. Beyond that, there are the more-noticeable Sensifit wings on the shoe’s upper, which Salomon designed to improve fit and accommodate foot swelling. Plus, that purple-red fade is nice.
