Odds are, you’ve encountered the concept of a CBD supplement before. The praises of the relaxing and anxiety-reducing cannabinoid have been sung far and wide, as well as opposition and doubt. Whatever you think of CBD, there’s no denying its influence: the industry is projected to grow into a $7.8 billion industry in 2022, and with little to no regulation, has been described as the “Wild Wild West”.

The Wild West is a place that Ty Haney seems to sit in with comfort. As the founder Outdoor Voices, one of the biggest names in activewear, Haney appears to enjoy blazing trails and conquering new ground. She left the company she founded at the young age of 24 for good in January 2021, and her new project Joggy is taking on CBD in a new and novel way. The brand currently offers four core products: two full-spectrum CBD supplements, a roll-on cooling CBD stick and most recently, CBD gummies meant to relax and recharge upon eating.

For Haney, the through line for both OV and Joggy has been movement — she initially created design-forward activewear that inspired physical movement, and Joggy continues that supportive mission by bringing products to market that are meant to support recreation in all forms.

I sat down with Haney to discuss the new products coming from Joggy, as well as the journey both she and the brand have been on in bringing wellness to a new generation.

You created one of the most well-known activewear brands on the market, and you’re breaking new ground with Joggy. What have both experiences been like?

Movement is the through-line for the products I create, there are four principles that have informed Joggy and the products that we’re working on: movement, plant-based, expertise, and personality.

In regards to plant-based, I’ve spent the last eight or so years in a very synthetic world, and with Joggy it’s really nice to be able to reset, in terms of what really matters. I think everything is headed in a plant-based direction, including activewear.

How did expertise influence the creation of Joggy’s products?

In Joggy’s case, we found this really awesome manufacturer and testing facility that focuses on cannabinoids, called Sante Labs. What stood out is that Sante has lipid encapsulation tech that is water based — it essentially breaks down the cannabinoids into billions of particles, and then re-encapsulates them to a lipid-like structure, which ultimately makes them four times more bio-available to your body. It’s water based, which is why it’s white, which can be quite shocking; it’s way different than your traditional oil-based formula. But, if you go back to science class, and thank about oil and water not mixing, it makes sense that the water-based formula that has this technology would be much more fast-acting and you’d feel the effects of it quicker, because it’s not delivered in something that your body can’t absorb.

The lipid encapsulation is how you protect the quality of the lipids, and then that lipid structure lives within the water-based formulation rather than oil, which makes it that much more accessible. The encapsulation just protects the quality of the cannabinoids.

How did personality come into play with Joggy?

The brand has a healthy tension between the art and science, which has always been something I’ve liked to balance. This is a product where technical credibility really matters — you’re now putting something in your body, and that ups the stakes. That’s where leveling up with this really great facility has been key. The other aspect to consider is that the majority of CBD on the market has not been tested by accredited facilities; you’re not getting the same dosage in a container every time you buy it, and that’s something I didn’t really know about the CBD space until we got into it. That discrepancy is going to become a major issue with CBD companies as the FDA cracks down on the testing piece of this. But, it’s all been interesting to learn, and it’s a cool space to be playing.

The Runner’s High has a very strong, very distinct flavor. It’s also white, which was surprising when I first used it. How do you suggest using the product?

It’s to each their own. We chose not to flavor it very intentionally – Runner’s High uses THCV in its formulation — it’s the energizing cannabinoid, and that’s what has the strong taste. We did initial focus groups with this product, and most people said they would rather put it into something that’s better tasting, than have a slightly-off, muddled, synthetic flavor to it. So we chose to keep it unflavored, and allow people to choose what to add it to. A lot of the feedback has been interesting — many of the reviews have said when a product tastes a specific way, or tastes strong, it tastes like it’s working. I think people that are used to taking this kind of product are open to its strong flavor.

Have you run into any issues when it comes to sales or distributions, discrepancies in federal and state regulations when it comes to CBD?

The payment processors are the biggest issue with full spectrum CBD, so getting approved took longer than anticipated. Beyond the payment processors, we’ve been lucky that we’re not the first to do it, because it is pretty wild Wild West. It is a difficult process for any full-spectrum product with THC.

Is Joggy going to be releasing any new products this year?

The beverage – our energy drink – will come out in the fall. The founding members of the brand that bought the Joggy Doggy collectible NFT have been brought into the development process and have been helping to give feedback on factors like flavor, fizz, etc. We’ve set the vision for this, done the tech work and now the finishing touches are being influenced by the founding members, which is pretty cool.
