In the northern hemisphere, the best waves come when the air and water temps drop toward freezing. This is particularly true on the East Coast, where nor’easters bring pummeling head-high barreling tubes. Hunting down those waves, however, takes a kit built for the harshest elements. Most worthwhile breaks are at least a day trip away, so pack the cooler, fill your thermos full of coffee, steady yourself and venture beyond the palms and sunny weather of your standard beach break.
