Following up on Patagonia’s recently-launched repair-and-sell Worn Wear website, REI has officially launched a program to sell used outdoor gear online. Its site is called Used Gear (very straightforward, REI), and it’s already stocked with thousands of items.
REI isn’t new to selling well-loved gear at discounted prices and, in fact, already had most of the framework in place to support its new program. One of the cooperatively-owned outdoor retailer’s hallmarks is its one-year return policy. In the past, that returned gear ended up at infrequent members-only sales called Garage Sales and Scratch and Dent Sales. Those events will still occur, but now much of those high-quality givebacks will be available to everyone, year-round. Putting all that equipment online seems like a no-brainer, and unlike Patagonia, REI can offer used gear from hundreds of brands.
