Welcome to another installment of Staff Picks from our Sports and Outdoors team. Every other week, we select our favorite pieces out of the gear we’re testing, mainstays in our kits, as well as items on our wish lists. It’s like a sneak peek at the gear we’re testing and what we’re stoked on. Have something you think we should check out? Or just want to say hi? Drop us a line at [email protected].

Helly Hansen HH Rain Jacket

Taking design cues from Helly Hansen’s archive of hard-wearing nautical gear, the HH rain jacket is a reimagined, modern version of the brand’s classic Fisherman’s raincoat. It features a revamped iteration of HH’s Helox fabric that stretches to allow easy movement and supreme comfort while still being fully waterproof and windproof. The jacket is part of Helly Hansen’s 140 Collection, a callout to the Norwegian brand’s 140-year history. If the performance doesn’t get you, the classic styling definitely should. — Presented by Helly Hansen

Salewa Mountain Trainer GTX

No fall adventure is enjoyable without the proper footwear, and Salewa’s Mountain Trainer GTX is just that. I prefer the low-top version, but it also comes in a high top. The Gore-Tex liner keeps your foot dry in unexpected expected fall deluges. It also features a tacky Vibram outsole and a climbing shoe-esque lace system that extends into the toe box for a near-perfect fit. — AJ Powell, Assistant Editor

Stance Colby Hiking Socks

Who says hiking socks have to look dorky to be high-performance? Not Stance, that’s for sure. In a remarkably overcrowded wool sock market (how many Smartwool copycats can we extract from New Zealand’s sheep?) Stance distinguishes itself with bold colors and unique patterns, while retaining the same great performance details — moisture-wicking, footpad cushioning, anatomical fit — that you find in the uglier stuff. – Michael Finn, Associate Staff Writer

Stanley Adventure SS Flask

There’s something about fall — the cooler temperatures, the smell of fallen leaves — that gets me in a festive mood. In my opinion, the best way to embrace those feelings is with a summit beer (pack weight be damned) or a sip of whiskey by the fire. Stanley’s basic adventure flask is perfect for the latter; it’s the right size for taking on a late afternoon hike or an overnight to a hut, and it’s durable and affordable too. — Tanner Bowden, Editorial Apprentice
