In 1966, a Scandinavian expedition set out to explore Greenland. They carried Fjällräven’s functional backpacks and tents, but when it came to outerwear they were left with bulky, slow-drying clothing. Their stories, and gear critiques, inspired Åke Nordin to create a performance jacket: the original 1968 Greenland Jacket, constructed from G-1000 fabric. And with the application and removal of Greenland wax, the jacket could be windproof, waterproof, breathable and durable.
Next year, Fjällräven will celebrate the hardwearing jacket’s fiftieth anniversary with an expansion of the Greenland line. The 1960s outdoor aesthetic remains, but each piece is now enhanced by the brand’s newer and more sustainable materials, G-1000 Eco and PFC-Free Eco-Shell. So far, Fjällräven has revealed a run of packs and two updated jackets. As a whole, the line represents a nod at the past with mindfulness toward what’s yet to come. “We’ve been trekking for fifty years,” said Åke. “I hope we never get there.”
