Our Dream Outdoor Adventure Vacations

When we daydream about getting away for a while, these are the places we think of.

Welcome to another installment of Staff Picks from our Sports and Outdoors team. Each week, we select our favorite pieces out of the gear we’re testing, mainstays in our kits, as well as items on our wish lists. It’s like a sneak peek at the gear we’re testing and what we’re stoked on. Have something you think we should check out? Or just want to say hi? Drop us a line at [email protected].

Twenty-five dollars a night gets you a bunk in this two-story hut, located just northwest of Vancouver in the Tantalus Range at 4,000 feet. Accommodations are simple (outhouse, propane lighting, woodstove heat). But since most get to the area via helicopter, there ought to be nobody to bother me while I fish the lonely Lake Lovely Water. Lovely, indeed.

Tipiliuke, San Martín de los Andes, Argentina

Fly fishing for massive brown trout on 17 miles of nearly virgin waters right in the heart of Patagonia, all while wrapped in luxury acomodations? Count me in. It’s remote for sure, taking upwards of 18 hours to get to depending on where you’re located, but Tipiliuke is well worth it. It was named one of the top 72 boutique hotels in the world by Taschen and is set on a gorgeous 50,000-acre estancia, or ranch. While the average fish size ranges from 14 to 20 inches, it’s not uncommon for brown trout to reach lengths upwards of 30 inches.

Deplar Farm, Sveitarfélagið Skagafjörður, Iceland

Far from the Instagram crowds of the Blue Lagoon lies Iceland’s rugged Troll Peninsula. It’s a mountainous region that’s essentially closed off all winter long, unless you have a helicopter. Eleven Experience does have a helicopter, and after a full day of skiing from that helicopter (or surfing the North Atlantic), you can kick up your feet at Deplar Farm — Eleven’s comfortably modern, 13-bedroom lodge. A stay here comes complete with chef-made Icelandic meals, like Arctic char and skyr, and nonstop views of the Fljot Valley. And Deplar isn’t just for chasing late-winter snow — there’s plenty of fishing and trekking to be had when the sun doesn’t set until 10 p.m.
