After his arms seized up during a long-distance kayaking trip, Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Rod MacKinnon decided to investigate the causes of muscle cramps. His findings pointed not to lack of hydration as the culprit, but to a hyper-excited motor nerve induced by muscle fatigue.

Ben Foster plays a powerfully convincing Lance Armstrong in The Program, which had its theatrical release in France this past week after a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Chris O’Dowd stars as David Walsh, an Irish sports journalist set on exposing Armstrong’s use of banned substances.

National Park Fund Set to Expire

The Land and Water Conservation Fund is set to expire at the end of the month unless Congress votes to extend it. Most often used to match grants, buy land and maintain infrastructure, the fund has benefited over 60 percent of national parks.

Centenarian Sets Five World Records

At the San Diego Senior Olympics this past Sunday, Don Pellmann set five world records for his age group. He became the first centenarian competitor to break 27 seconds in the 100-meter dash despite his refusal to warm up or stretch.
