Tradeoffs. From a product’s size and weight to its materials and capabilities, they are almost impossible to avoid.

The second distinguishing feature is 7mesh’s clever StashSystem pocket, which is essentially built-in storage for the jacket itself. What I really love here is a streamlined pair of clips that enable you to strap the jacket to your top tube when not in use.

But every once in a while, something comes along that seems to beat the system, offering everything you want without sacrifice.

The latest example? The new Mission Jacket from high-end Canadian cycling apparel brand 7mesh, which delivers a winning feature set while clocking in at just 6.5 ounces. (That’s for a men’s medium; a women’s medium weighs less than 6.2 ounces.)

So what exactly makes this new jacket so special? Made of DWR-treated, PFAS-free recycled polyester knit fabric, it boasts a 2-way zipper, a side-hem cinch, taped seams, stretch cuffs and a reflective rear panel, promising a proper blend of climate control, comfort, aerodynamic-ness and safety.

Those qualities alone are sufficiently impressive, but what really makes it stand out from the pack are a couple of other features unique to a jacket this light.

First off are three jersey-style cargo pockets in the rear, something every cyclist cherishes for toting snacks, tools and other essentials during long rides.

Borrowing from the brand’s renowned Anything System, they reside in the Mission’s free-floating bottom half design, enabling a wide variety of items to be stored.

The second distinguishing feature is 7mesh’s clever StashSystem pocket, which is essentially built-in storage for the jacket itself. What I really love here is a streamlined pair of clips that enable you to strap the jacket to your top tube when not in use.

That means if it’s sunny when you head out, you can simply store it out of the way. Should temps drop or clouds roll in later on, simply unclip, unpack, throw it on and continue on your way.

Perhaps the only area where the Mission Jacket does get docked in the tradeoff game is price, as it retails for $350.

But let me tell ya, when I was getting ravaged by a freak storm in the Dolomites while test-riding Pinarello’s new Dogma F over the summer, I would have gladly forked over that amount for a bit of lightweight, high-functioning protection. If you bike regularly, I’m pretty sure you know the feeling.
